Province of Piacenza. Welcome to the Official Tourist Information SiteScudo Piacenza

Up to 68 A.D. even Piacenza could boast the presence in its territory of an amphithreatre. It stood outside the city walls, on the bank of Po river, and according to numerous documents it was one of the most majestic and rich monuments in Italy. It was set on fire and destroyed by general Caecina, sent in Italy by the new emperor Otho to defeat the enemy troops under Vitellius, who camped in Piacenza. The city sided with Vitellius and Caecina troops had difficulty in entering the walls, so the general began his revenge by demolishing the beautiful amphitheatre. Some historians believe that this reaction was exaggerate and probably was backed by the neighbouring cities that envied Piacenza prosperity.
