EQUESTRIAN MONUMENTS TO THE FARNESE

Piazza dei Cavalli
Description
Undoubted masterpiece of the Baroque statuary art, the two equestrian monuments located in Piazza Cavalli (its name derives from them), were made by the Tuscan sculptor Francesco Mochi from Montevarchi (1580 - 1654). On the right theres Ranuccio Farnese (1620) wearing a roman costume and holding a sceptre;on the sides of the base two bas-reliefs represent Peace and Good Rule. On the left there's Alessandro Farnese (1625), Ranuccio's father, wrapped in a mantle tossed by the wind, on horseback of a wild horse. At the sides of the base, decorated by two cherubs holding a coat of arms, two bas-reliefs represent episodes of the war fought by Alessandro in the Flanders
How to get there
From the airports: 60 Km Milano Linate , 90 Km Milano Malpensa ; 150 Km da Bologna . From A1 motorway: Piacenza nord and sud exits; From A21 Piacenza est and ovest exits.
Piazza Cavalli may be reached from the railway station: go along Viale SantAmbrogio, which is on the right of the square opposite the station, till you reach Viale Risorgimento and Via Cavour. From the motorway exits: from Piacenza Est and Piacenza Sud, stay on the right and take Via Caorsana, driving past the cemetery and over the by-pass, then turn right ad take Via Colombo.Once you reach the monument to the Roman She-wolf stay on the right until you get to the railway station. From the railway station, go along Viale SantAmbrogio, which is on the right of the square opposite the station, till you reach Viale Risorgimento and Via Cavour. From Piacenza Ovest motorway exit, turn left in via Emilia Pavese at the first traffic light.At the first traffic light, turn left again and take the city ringroad, until you reach the Pontieri Monument, turn right, taking Viale Risorgimento and via Cavour. From Piacenza Nord motorway exit, turn left into via Emilia, heading for Piacenza; after the bridge over the river Po, at the Pontieri monument go straight along Viale Risorgimento and via Cavour. Piazza Cavalli is pedestrian precinct, and may be reached by n°1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 13, 16, 17 TEMPI buses.
